Today was another exhausting day of travel, although we arrived at our destination at 5:45 instead of 6:45. The birds were hungry and exhausted. They find traveling stressful. Munchkin has decided he likes to sit on my shoulder, with head tucked under wing to nap. A few years ago we rented an RV to see what the experience would be like. On that trip, Munchkin faced forward and held his wings out as if ready to fly. The feeling of speed must have prompted him to do that.
I drove for two hours today - not bad! I like driving this rig - kind of fun. We are staying the night in a small town called St. George, 45 minutes from Charleston. Someone had asked me to give reports on the economy down here. St. George seems to have many closed businesses - almost every other shop is boarded up. The area right off of I-95 is bustling however, with the usual fast food joints. Lee talked to someone who was heading north from Florida, who said there were far fewer "snowbirds" there this winter, so people are not traveling as much. (For those of you from the West Coast, snowbirds are Easterners who flee the cold weather and head south for two or three months each winter.)
I find it very interesting that the I-95 corridor through North and South Carolina is very much like the Pine Barrens of New Jersey - sandy with mostly pine trees. The pines in the Carolinas don't seem to have to struggle quite as much to survive as those in NJ. Our first campground, in North Carolina, was located in one of these pine forested areas:
Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be much easier for all of us - just a couple of hours to Hilton Head Island! We will stay there for three or four days. I am looking forward to the water, shore birds, hiking, kayaking and biking, I hope! And Savannah. So much to see and do!
