Marco Island

The day started off with a visit by a Limpkin.  Florida is as far north as Limpkins breed, although there are isolated instances of sightings in other states.  They eat apple snails.

This motor home resort isn't very amenable to wildlife (too sterile).  It needs an island in the middle of the lake with mangroves, to establish a rookery, in my estimation.

We visited Marco Island today.  Like Naples, it is on the high-end, and is over-developed, again, in my estimation.  Marco Island is mostly concrete.  I decided I like Sanibel much better than Naples or Marco Island, as it is more casual, comfortable, and natural.  Here is Marco Island:

Granted, it has a beautiful beach and the Gulf water is perfect for swimming.  Today was another hot and humid day, 90 degrees, but the weather man says these temperatures are about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.  In other words, south Florida is experiencing summer weather about two months early.  Global warming, perhaps??

Someone asked how the parakeets and Munchkin the cockatiel are adapting to travel.  The parakeets are fine.  They have their own window right next to their cage, and they seem to enjoy having a view of the outdoors.

We let the parakeets out of their cage once or twice a day, and the first thing they do is fly three times from one end of the motor home to the other.  They like the exercise, I think.  They are generally very happy birds, and I love their bubbly chatter.

Once they fly their pattern, they settle down on either Munchkin's cage or their own.  They are very good about going back in their cage when asked.  They are amazingly smart for such little guys.

As for Munchkin, he has not taken to traveling quite as well.  He prefers sitting on my shoulder while we are driving down the road, and is very good about it.  He doesn't like it when Lee and I leave the RV to go sight seeing, but that's not new.  He is happiest when his "flock" is around him.  Munchkin pretty much ignores the parakeets.  He seems to believe they are birds, while he, on the other hand, is more closely related to Homo sapiens.   What can I say?  His favorite past-time is:

snuggling with Lee at nap time!
