We started off by going to the Rookery Bay Education Center to learn about this particular estuarine ecosystem. We took the short trail of 1/2 mile, and decided that was enough heat for one day. The birds and animals were smart enough to lay low in the heat, and we didn't see much, other than lizards.
Later in the day we drove to downtown Naples. Since Naples is on the water, it was cooler with the ocean breeze. There are lots of high-rises on the beach, and many canals and waterways that wind their way into the residential areas.
That's Lee looking out over the water.
The group of buildings on the left are built directly on pilings in the water, not attached to land, and are an island unto themselves.
Here's the beach, late in the day. Nice beach, but I imagine it gets very crowded with all those high-rises filled with tourists.
In Naples, there is a large amount of very visible opulence, like Palm Beach on the opposite coast. Some of the homes along the beach are huge. The home below is typical, although it has a smaller front yard than some. It is interesting how each region of Florida is so very different.
That's it for today. I think the heat got to me!
